Contracts & Leases

Contracts & Leases: Knowing What You’re Signing

Contracts and leases are part of everyday adult life—whether renting an apartment, starting a new job, or agreeing to a phone plan. This course helps young adults understand what contracts are, why they matter, and how to read them carefully before signing. The goal is to empower participants to enter agreements with confidence while avoiding common mistakes.

Participants will learn how to:

  • Understand the basics of a contract – What makes an agreement legally binding, and the key parts every contract should include.

  • Read leases with confidence – Identifying terms such as rent, deposits, utilities, maintenance responsibilities, renewal, and termination policies.

  • Spot red flags – Hidden fees, unclear language, or terms that may put them at a disadvantage.

  • Know their rights and responsibilities – What they are obligated to uphold, and what protections they have under the law.

  • Ask the right questions – How to clarify terms, request changes, or seek advice before committing.

  • Keep records – Why it’s important to save signed agreements and document communications with landlords or service providers.

  • Recognize consequences – What can happen if contracts or leases are broken, including financial penalties or legal action.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to approach contracts and leases with confidence, fully understanding their commitments and ensuring that agreements serve their best interests. This knowledge builds a foundation for independence while protecting them from costly mistakes.
